Description
“Helichrisum” Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, 2017 is an elegant and rich red wine made from Sangiovese grapes, which only improves with age. Its name comes from the aromatic wild herb “Immortelle”. The grapes for this wine are harvested from the highest points of the San Polino plots, more precisely from the vineyards with a southern orientation at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level. The soils of the plots are a mixture of sandy loam and volcanic soil with veins of marl.
2017 was a cold year. However, despite the harsh winter and low temperatures in early spring, the vineyards did not suffer serious damage from frost. As summer approached, the weather changed dramatically, becoming very hot and dry. This caused some damage to the plants, but the high location of the vineyards ensured constant ventilation, which helped the crop survive. In September, it finally rained, allowing the grapes to ripen in almost optimal conditions. Fermentation took place spontaneously with wild yeast in oak barrels. Pre-fermentation maceration took 3 days at 12 C, post-fermentation maceration lasted 40 days. The wine spends 6 months in French oak barriques and 3 years in large Slavonian and French oak barrels.
